Steamranger Heritage Railway

Suitable for all ages.

Are you looking to explore the costal or hillside regions of South Australia without having to waste fuel? Then the Steamranger Heritage Railway is what you’ve been looking for. The Steamranger Heritage Railway offer their guests three different steam power trains to choose from.

The Cockle train travels along the oldest steel railway in Australia, tracing back to 1854. Why is this train named the “Cockle train” you may ask? Following the railways construction in 1854, Port Elliot townsfolk travelled in horse drawn trains to Goolwa to collect cockles. At the end of the day the cockles were then carted on the train back to Port Elliot.

The Cockle train takes their guests on the same journey that many of the Port Elliot townsfolk embarked on. The Cockle train departs from Goolwa each day and stops at Middleton, before continuing onto Port Elliot. During the ride, guests can relax and enjoy magnificent views of the coastline. There is also ample time for passengers to explore and purchase refreshments from the local towns and the train stations along the route.
